Easter in Mallorca

Traditions

Easter is a wonderful time of year to spend with family and friends. The religious ceremonies and celebrations are abound on the Island of Mallorca.

Here is a glimpse of how the Mallorcans spend Easter, perhaps you would like to take a trip and experience it for yourself?

Processions

Between 29th March - 2nd April Mallorca sees a whealth of processions to remember the real reason we celebrate Easter. These begin traditionally on Palm Sunday in Churches all over the Island. These dates will alter depending on when Easter Sunday falls.

On Holy Thursday, thousands of Islanders will congregate in Palma for the " Crist de la Sang" parade. This is usually the busiest of the parades and starts at 19.00 from the Plaza del Hospital. The longest procession will continue through the streets of Palma until Dawn.

Good Friday

Good Friday sees the re-enactment of Passion of Christ, taking place traditionally on the steps of the Cathedral at noon. Following this at 19.30 is the Holy Burial procession which departs from the Church of San Fransisco.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday sees the joyful "Procession of the meeting" marking the moment when Jesus was resurrected with his mother. Groups of men carry a statue of Jesus towards a group of women carrying the statue of the Virgin Mary.

The Sunday after Easter sees Angel Sunday, this is when bread was given out to the poor. Today sees families and friend uniting with food and sharing meals outdoors in the pleasant Spring air. Bellvar Castle in Palma is the most popular meeting point. What better way to celebrate than magnificent scenary and views.

Various villages and towns will also have celebrations including Pollenca which sees the moving Descent from the Cross re-enactment.

All across the island people will come together and celebrate this special time. Wherever you choose to spend this Easter..

Felices Pascuas.
